James Robert Reed was born in Isleham on 16th February 1893 (Newmarket Q1-1893 3B:515), baptised in Isleham on 26th March 1893,
son of Joseph and Selina REED (née BROWN).
1901 census...Aged 8, he was at Fen Bank, Isleham, with his father Joseph REED [34] agricultural labourer; his mother Selina [30; sisters Ellen [10] and Florrie B. [6]; brothers Alfred C[4], Ernest W. [2] and Percy B. [ 9 months] and cousin Joseph [5]. The entire family were born in Isleham. 1911 census...Aged 18, a farm labourer, he was still at Fen Bank, Isleham, with his parents, brothers Alfred Cecil (farm labourer), Ernest William and Percy Baden, new sister Roseanna [8] and four more brothers, Albert [7],Herbert [4], Arthur [2] and George Fred [1]. All the new siblings were born in Isleham. On 17th January 1916 in Isleham, he married Honor Kate BECKETT [16-4-1897]. They had a daughter Delphis Edna REED. born o n 5-8-1916. They lived at the Coal Yard Drive, Isleham. |

Enlisted in Newmarket. Being wounded and no service records found it cannot be said where or when he was wounded, however it was the time of the 1st battle of GAZA. The 5th Suffolks were attacking Sheikh Abbas ridge, which was taken and the Brigade was then ordered to Mansura, two miles away towards the sea The battalion had just 4 die on the 27th, all buried in Gaza War Cemetery. |
